Major League Sales Tips - Part
One
By Jeremy Nason
What does it take for a
good baseball player to be called up from a triple A minor
league baseball team to the majors? Is there just one skill, or
is there a set of skills they need to master?
Do the most
talented players always make it into the majors?
What do all
major league players have in common?
Whether you are playing
baseball or selling insurance products there are certain things
you must do to make it into the major leagues.
The one critically
important thing that all major league players have in common is
a genuine love of the game. It’s their enthusiasm and confidence that keeps
them going and always playing their hardest. It’s what makes the
average player great. Most of the major league ballplayers love
the game so much they would play the game even if they weren't
paid.
So, what sales strategies
and skills do you need in order for you to make it into the
major leagues of selling insurance?
1. Like in baseball you must become a specialist in one area.
All the best ballplayers
specialize in one position -- first base, center field, pitcher,
catcher, etc. If you want to make it to the major leagues of
insurance sales, you must specialize.
Specialization is a
fundamental key to sales success. It's how you create
top-of-mind awareness among a specific target market. It’s how
you get in the prospect's door. If you want to attract the most
prospects to you and substantially grow your insurance business,
then you must provide a service that addresses an immediate need
and want that your prospects have today.
By promoting yourself as a
specialist in a specific area, the automatic perception is that
you are an expert in that area. Don’t most people prefer to work
with the expert?

Over the years,
specialization has been referred to as niche marketing. What’s
your niche market? What immediate problem are you solving for a
specific group of people?
Can you specialize in
working with retirees, who invest in CDs, to help them make sure
they "Don’t Outlive Their Retirement Income?"
Or, work with boomers
and seniors who have money in the market, to help them to
"Reap the Upside of the Market, Without the Downside Risks?"

Or, could you work
with new parents to help them "Maximize Their
Eligibility for Free College Financial Aid?"
Or, could you work with middle-income families
to help them to "Live Debt Free & Truly Wealthy?"

2. How many people never make it out of the minor leagues,
because they never do anything to standout from the other
players?
Unfortunately, when you're
selling the same insurance products and services everybody else
is selling, you’ll constantly struggle to attract prospects to
you. Your offer gets lost among the hundreds of other offers. In
order to make to the major leagues, you have to help people to
believe that you are unique. Perception is reality. You need to
have a unique offer or a unique concept for your specific
customer. Remember, it's not about you or your products. It's
about providing a solution to a real problem your prospect has.
If someone asks what you
do, what do you tell them? “I sell insurance.”
What kind of response will
you get?

If you want to stand out,
how about instead saying something unique like:
"I help retirees
make sure they don’t outlive their retirement income, while
providing them with safety and guarantees!”
Or, "I show
boomers and seniors who have money in the market, how to "Reap
the Upside of the Market, Without the Downside Risks!"
Or, “I show
new parents how to fund their children’s college education, and
maximize their eligibility for free money from government!”
Or, I help middle income families to live debt free and
truly wealthy, without them spending any additional money, or
sacrificing their current life style!”
And, you must deliver this
unique message in everything you do!!!
3. In baseball there are certain fundamentals every player must
learn, and continually practice to master.
I only know of two ways to
learn something new. You can learn from your own experiences, or
you can learn from other people's experiences. Learning things
on your own through 'trial and error' is very costly and
time consuming. There are very few things you will ever do that
haven't already been done before. So, why waste your valuable
time and money reinventing the wheel?
Step 1 - Become an
avid reader.
I know you don't have
time to read books. You're too busy running your business
and taking care of your family. However, as a wise
millionaire named Joe Karbo once said, "Most
people are too busy earning a living to make any real
money!" Most experts recommend you devote at least one
full hour per day to reading. The benefits will be huge.
Start by becoming a
member of the
Insurance Marketing and Sales Resource Center™.
And, become a member
of ProducesWeb.
Step 2 - Subscribe
to good newsletters.
The world and our
business are changing rapidly. If you want to keep your
business growing, you've got to keep up with all the hot new
techniques and ideas. There's nothing better than a
newsletter for getting fresh new ideas and perspectives from
the experts in your field. I personally subscribe to more
than a dozen newsletters written by true experts who are
"doing" what they teach others how to do. So as soon as
finish reading this, find some good newsletters to subscribe
to. I promise it will be worth the investment.

Step 3 - Attend webinars, seminars and boot camps.
A great way to learn
the marketing and sales skills you need is by sharing ideas
with other successful people in your business. I can
honestly say I have always made back, at least five times my
investment in these activities. If the reason you're not
attending these functions is that you can't afford it,
you're making a huge financial mistake. Borrow the money if
you have to. It's the best possible investment you will ever
make in yourself and your business.

Step 4 - Invest in
audio and video training and motivational tapes.
As Zig Ziglar
said, "Make your car into a university." We all spend
a lot of time driving, so why not take advantage of the
time. Listen to sales and motivation tapes on the way to and
from your sales calls. Does it makes sense to go out and try
to reinvent the wheel when someone else has already gone
through great pain and sacrifice to learn that skill for
you?

Step 5 - Practice,
practice, practice.
You should practice
all the time. The learning and rehearsing never stop. Like
the baseball player you must commit to continuous learning
and practice to get better at what you do. With practice,
the sales skills you need should become second nature to
you.
4. To succeed in baseball, you must take advantage of the
opportunities that constantly present themselves.
During a baseball game
there are golden opportunities that players must take advantage
of if they want to win the game. Opportunities like turning a
double play, intentionally walking a hot hitter or stealing a
base.
In sales, one of the most
overlooked golden opportunities for you is your current clients.
Can you name me one successful business that does not depend on
repeat business for a large portion of its annual revenues?
Please take a few minutes and really think about it, because
this is a huge, squandered opportunity for most agents. You
can't think of one, because there isn't one. If you think you've
found one, think again.
Let's put it into
perspective. Assume for a moment that you own a restaurant.
Would it be better to cater to your current customers, to keep
them coming back? Or, would you want to spend all of your time
and money looking for new customers? How long would your
restaurant survive, if your current customers stopped coming
back? Isn't it the same for a clothing store, gas station,
furniture store, attorney, doctor, accountant or your business?

If you’ve been in the
business for more than a year, 40 percent of your sales each
year should be coming from your existing clients! It’s much
easier to set an appointment with and sell to an existing client
than it is to attract new prospects and sell to them. If you are
not doing an annual client review and a thorough fact-find each
year with every client, then you are missing a golden opportunity.

5. One the biggest reasons ball teams lose games is they
squander their opportunities.
After every inning, or at
the end of the ball game, a sportscasters will wrap up the
inning or ball game and talk about how many players were left on
base. It was a missed opportunity to score more runs. How many
opportunities are you missing to make a sale by not staying in
constant touch with your friends, family, clients, prospects and
the people you do business with?
Here are some simple
ideas:
-
Newsletters,
special reports or other information that provide useful
content, with a subtle underlying sales message.
Consider putting together a brief newsletter that provides
valuable information they can use, not just puffery about
your company and products. For example, include tips and
tidbits that can help them in their jobs, college education
funding, debt elimination and tax saving ideas. Of course
the suggestions could include the use of your product or
service, but that's not the main reason for the
communication. By the way, you could send these via mail or email.

-
Post cards. We
all trash unopened direct mail. When was the last time,
though, you didn't at least skim the message on a postcard?
At an investment of less than 50 cents each including
postage, postcards printed with your message are an
inexpensive way to get in front of customers and prospects.
-
Articles you clip
that would be of interest. Think to yourself, "Who
else would be interested in this?"

-
Handwritten notes.
It takes more time, but if you commit to just a few of these
per week to your very best clients, the rewards could be
well worth it. I'm often asked about using stationery with
reps' photos. Personally, I like them. It's easier to
connect with a person when you know what she looks like. You
don't photograph well, you say? I've seen reps that have had
caricatures drawn and printed on their personalized note
cards. It's different and fun.
-
Birthday cards and
other holiday cards, or even cards for no particular reason.
While your company's stationery is adequate for regular
thank you notes, a hand-picked postcard with a design or
topic of interest to the customer speaks volumes. When
you're traveling for pleasure or business, scan the touristy
post card racks with specific prospects and customers in
mind.
-
Special items for
very select clients. I've sent books to prospects on
topics unrelated to what I sell, but that I knew they were
interested in. Find out what your prospects' and customers'
passions are, and believe me that transcends business.
Note: Most of the
ideas above can be sent in the same envelope with your monthly
newsletter to save postage.
Tune in next week for Part
2 with five more major league selling ideas.
