Here is my story of how I broke into the Adult Financial Education Marketplace and stopped buying life insurance leads…
Well, to be honest, I had reached my wit’s end!
I began to cry and I started to pray.
My wife was expecting and I wanted her to be able to stay home and raise my first child. But instead, she was out supporting me financially… While I got my insurance business off the ground.
I hated not being able to support her! And now with a baby on the way, this was even more troubling.
I had been working life insurance leads for the past two years… And it seemed no matter how hard I worked I just couldn’t make ends meet!
After leaving my captive company and going independent. (And moving halfway across the country from NY to the boondocks called the State line between Illinois and Wisconsin!) It was just not happening for me.
In my first year as an independent, I spent $20,000 on life insurance leads, only to earn $19,000 in first-year commissions.
If I kept this up, I would be bankrupt soon for sure.
I knew there had to be a better way, but I was sure I would not find one.
That’s why one day I started to cry and pray really hard about my situation.
I just didn’t want my wife to have to continue to support our family. And for me to stay home and play Mr. Mom (not that there is anything wrong with that, it’s just not what I wanted)! I couldn’t live with myself and I was starting to feel like a real failure.
I have seen people succeed in my industry.
- What was wrong with me?
- Why couldn’t I seem to make it happen?
- Were my high school teachers right about me?
- Was I just an underachiever like I had been told my whole life?
- Was it some rare quality that someone needed to possess to make it in this business… That I just didn’t have?
Was there an easier job I could get where at least I could make enough money? So my wife wouldn’t have to work full-time to help support our family… While trying to raise a newborn?
The truth is, I had no idea! I had tried everything, Or so I thought….
For the first year after I moved out of New York… I ordered direct mail leads for mortgage life insurance protection.
I was doing that at the time when I almost quit the life insurance business.
And I did get some clients… But it was damn near impossible.
You had to call every life insurance lead 5 to 10 times just to get them on the phone! And then half of the leads were just too sick to qualify for life insurance. And the other half of them were too busy to want to talk to you.
If you actually did book an appointment more than half the time, you would GET PORTCHED!
Do you know what it means to get porched?
That means you were left out in the rain ringing someone’s doorbell at 6:00 in the evening… And they do not show up.
I was chasing people all day long, diving all over town, putting all kinds of miles on my car. I was spending tons of money on life insurance leads and it just wasn’t working out for me.
A friend of mine suggested I try working in the Final Expense market… But I couldn’t imagine how those life insurance leads would be any better.
In the Final Expense market, all the clients are much older and they tend to get better responses in lower-income markets.
So, now I would be dealing with people who were not only too sick to qualify… But had next to no money to pay for benefits.
Another colleague told me I should try working on online term life insurance leads… And try selling those life insurance leads over the phone.
I gave it a try for an entire summer.
I sat in my little office in my home and called life insurance leads all day long.
It was incredibly lonely as I never went to see anyone.
Now back then, when I tried it, the life insurance leads were only $3.00 or $4.00 apiece.
I understand that life insurance leads are a lot more expensive today.
I did sell some policies on the phone and through the mail! (E-app had not even been born yet, did I mention I’m kinda old? Like in my 50s!) It was a lot of work for mostly cheap term policies! And, like I said, I was very lonely doing it that way.
I thought I could make it work. But it was still not bringing in the kind of money I needed to even call what I was doing a valid life insurance business.

I took classes on marketing. And I read every book I could get my hands on. But nothing really seemed to propel me toward success.
I was losing the battle, I felt like a loser and it was killing me inside.
