Dear Friends, I’m writHelp middle-income families Live The American Dream - The American Dream Is Alive And Attainable For Anyone!ing the following story because many younger people today are being led to believe that the American Dream is not possible. I strongly disagree with that! The American Dream is alive and attainable for anyone willing to put in the effort to make it happen for them. With a little help and faith, the American Dream is achievable for every middle-income family no matter where you are in your working life.

My wife and I have lived the American Dream. We have had our struggles along the way. But we worked hard, did whatever we had to do, and were determined to succeed. We did it all on our own. The Lord has blessed us. And we have had a lot of luck along the way.

Our Abbreviated American Dream Story

In June 1967, I met my future wife. I asked her to marry me three months later. We were married on February 16, 1968. My wife was 18 and I was 19. We have now been married for over 55 years.

Joined The Air Force

I enlisted in the US Air Force 36 days after we married. I was sent to Texas for basic training and 43 weeks of electronics technical school. My wife joined me in San Antonio, Texas 14 weeks later. While I was in basic training my wife called me to tell me she was pregnant.

After my wife joined me, she lived in a mobile home for about two months. Initially, I could only get a pass to see her on the weekends.

When I was finally permitted to live off base, a few weeks later we rented a small apartment. The apartment was an older motel converted into one-bedroom apartments. For us to afford to live off base I worked as an assistant manager at a Dairy Queen and took care of the other apartments where we lived, (mowing the lawn, painting, etc.)! That was while attending 8 hours of technical school, 5 days a week – along with my other military duties. My wife could not work outside the home, because she had morning sickness and struggled with the heat and humidity in Texas. Our daughter was born on December 7, 1968, 10 months after we were married.

After I graduated from technical school we were fortunate to be stationed at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts, 113 miles from where our parents lived. While at Westover AFB I worked rotating shifts. My schedule gave me four days off in a row, 3 times a month. This allowed us to drive home and I worked with my father painting houses to earn enough money – so we could rent an apartment in Holyoke MA.

I was reassigned to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska eight months later. Initially, I had to leave my wife and daughter to live with her parents. The plan was to sell our car and save enough money so they could afford to fly to Alaska. A little over a month later we were all together. However, because I was part of a communications installation team that traveled all around Alaska and overseas I could not get a second job to afford an apartment! Accordingly, my wife first babysat for working mothers, until she was able to get a job as a shipping clerk for the Base Exchange. Six months later she was promoted to be the head shipping clerk for $2.25 per hour ($4.68k per year).

The 1968 median family income was $7,700! 

Left The Air Force

In September of 1971, my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given a few months to live. I took an emergency leave and my family drove from Alaska, across Canada to Massachusetts to be with my mother. I decided to leave the Air Force and took a 5-month early-out emergency discharge. Once back in Massachusetts, my wife worked in a shipping company for a few months (paid as piecework), while I waited for my formal discharge from the Air Force.

Our Working Career

In November of 1971, I went to work for a manufacturing company as an electronic technician for $3.23 per hour ($6.8k per year). We lived with some friends for about six months until we had enough money to rent an apartment. My mother passed away six months later, at age 43, in August of 1972.

The 1971 median family income was $10,290! 

During the next 5 years, my wife and I both worked to support our family, while helping out my father and my two teenage brothers. My father had a heart attack a few months after my mother died. And off and on over the next 7 years my father and brothers lived with us.

In 1971,  my wife worked on a manufacturing assembly line for $2.50 per hour ($5.2k per year). A few months later she took a job as a  secretary. About a year later was promoted to Senior Quality Control Secretary (10k annually)! I started as an electronics technician and was promoted to a special projects team ($12k annually). Then I was promoted to Section Leader of a small specialty department ($18k annually). In 1975 we bought our first home in Bridgewater Mass.

The 1975 median family income was $13,720!

My wife and I started taking night courses at the community college in 1972. I got my Associate Degree In Business Management in 1976.

In 1977,  my wife was pregnant with our second child. A few months before the birth of our baby boy she quit working outside the home. And I started working a second job for a year to make ends meet. Our second child, a baby boy was born in January 1977.

In 1978, I was promoted to quality control foreman on the second shift ($22k annually). Then in Sept of 1978, my wife gave birth to our third child, a baby boy.

In 1979,  my wife went back to work part-time as a billing clerk in the accounting department. In six months she went full-time as a  junior accountant. Then she was promoted to an accountant and then to a senior corporate accountant in 1981 (32k annually).

In 1980,  I was promoted to senior quality control engineer ($28,000 annually). In 1981 I left the company where I had worked for almost 10 years. I took a job as a Quality Control General Foreman to help out a friend ($30k annually).

The 1980 median family income was $21,o20!

My Entrance Into Insurance Sales 

We bought our second home in 1981. In March of 1982, I quit my job during one of the worst recessions in US history! I was out of work for almost 3 months because no one was hiring with the recession.

In June of 1982, I took a temporary job as an insurance agent, only because they offered a 3-month training salary. With only 6 months in insurance sales, I led my district office of over 40 agents. Over the next six years in personal sales, I led my office in five of those years. And qualified for many sales conferences.

In 1984, my wife was able to quit working outside of the home to take care of our family.

Then in 1989, we decided to move to Jensen Beach, Florida to be near my wife’s aging parents. I took a position as an Insurance Agency Branch Manager starting at $82,000, plus annual bonuses!

In 1995, I started my first independent insurance agency. In December 1999 my son and I started the Insurance Pro shop!

The 1989 median family income was $51,681!

You Can Achieve The American Dream

As I stated earlier, I wrote this story because many younger people today believe that the American Dream is not possible. I strongly disagree with that! The American Dream is alive and attainable for everyone willing to put in the effort to make it happen for them.

If you want the American Dream don’t chase that perfect job. Take any job at a good company and work your way up. Take your nights and weekends to study and train for a job where you will make the money you want.

Remember that your parents didn’t have everything when they started their lives together. Accept success is gradual, not immediate. You may not be able to go out and buy what your parents had. But your parents probably couldn’t buy what they have now when they were your age.

The problem with wanting what your parents have now is that you will get into debt. And when you get into debt, your ability to achieve the American Dream is limited. When you have debt from buying the fancy new car you want or credit card debt – it stops you from being able to save for a new home. You can’t quit your job and start your own business when you have credit card bills.

Work Hard To Reach The American Dream

Unfortunately, working hard is not something most people want to do today! Many people do as little work as possible just to get by. This attitude won’t help people to reach the American Dream they want.

Whether you work in an office, or as a technician on an assembly line put in extra effort. If you are an office worker, do more than what is expected, and ask for more work. If you are a technician, help solve problems on the assembly line.

There are a lot of Americans who do not believe in the American Dream, or believe that it is unachievable. These people lack faith. They believe that factors such as discrimination and unequal opportunities provide barriers to reaching the American Dream.

While others believe anything is possible with determination, hard work, and overcoming obstacles. Some believe that coming from nothing and becoming insanely successful is only a myth. However many have lived it!

One of them is Oprah Winfrey, one of the richest women in the world. Winfrey was an orphan raised by her grandma with little money. She has overcome child abuse, rape, weight gain, depression, failed romance, and other hardships to attain her success. Oprah Winfrey symbolizes the individual who by such means rises above the torment to become one of the wealthiest and most recognized public figures in the world.

Some people believe being wealthy is the American Dream. The American Dream is about personal freedom and a good family life. Overall, 36% of U.S. adults say their family has achieved the American Dream, while another 46% say they are “on their way” to achieving it, (survey by Pew Research Center).

Chance and luck have a lot to do with one’s success in achieving the American Dream. However, so does willpower, control of one’s behavior, and making good decisions. It is in your hands to shape your life, seize opportunities, get an education, resist failure, and set goals, to ultimately achieve the American Dream.

The American Dream is possible in the US due to equal opportunity for all. If kids once living in poverty and in slums can become lawyers or doctors, if an immigrant can become California’s governor…  if handicapped kids can play basketball… If ordinary people can become extraordinary people… then the American Dream is possible.

How To Achieve The American Dream

Are you one of the many people today who do just enough work to get by? Will that eventually lead to you getting a raise? No! Will that eventually lead to you getting a promotion? No!

What happens when you put in extra hours and extra effort? What happens when you decide to get more education to do your job better? And what happens when you gain more experience? What if you work with and help others to succeed? Will you feel better and more confident about yourself? The more confident you are in your abilities the better job you will do. You will become more valuable to your current company. You also become more valuable in the job market.

As Earl Nightingale said… “The Amount of Money We Receive Will Always Be in a Direct Ratio to the Demand for What We Do, Our Ability to Do It, and the Difficulty in Replacing Us.”

Elon Musk… “You are paid in direct proportion to the difficulty of the problems you solve.”

Brian Tracey put it this way… “The Law Of Income: You Get Paid In Direct Proportion To The Amount Of VALUE You Deliver To Your Marketplace!”
