Here’s everything a brand-new life insurance agent needs during the first 30 days.
I’m Brand New to Selling Life Insurance , What Do I Do Now?
If you’re a brand-new life insurance agent, your first 30 days should focus on learning your products, practicing client conversations, finding qualified prospects, scheduling appointments, and building daily habits. Don’t worry about becoming an expert. Focus on becoming consistent. The agents who master the fundamentals during their first month are far more likely to build a long-term career.
You did it. You sat through the pre-licensing course, you memorized the difference between a revocable and irrevocable beneficiary, and you passed the state exam. You’ve got the license in your hand. Now what?
If you’re like 90% of brand new life insurance agents, you’re currently sitting at your desk feeling a mix of excitement and absolute terror. You have the “legal” right to sell, but you have no idea how to actually get a client, what to say when you find one, or how to move them from “I’ll think about it” to “Where do I sign?”
Most agencies will hand you a phone book (or a list of overpriced, low-quality leads) and tell you to “start dialing.” Don’t do it.
If you want to survive your first year, and actually thrive, you need a system, not just a license. You need to stop acting like a salesperson and start acting like a Trusted Advisor.
Here is your no-nonsense, 7-step roadmap to making your insurance agent first sale and building a career that lasts.
Step 1: Stop Training , Start Doing
The “Knowledge Trap” is the #1 killer of the new insurance agent. You think you need to know every nuance of every policy rider before you talk to a human being. You don’t.
You are using “training” as a form of procrastination because you’re afraid of rejection. Newsflash: You will never know it all. The industry changes too fast. You already know enough to help a family protect their future.
As industry legend Lew Nason always says:
“Knowledge Is Power, But Only If It Is Followed By Action!”
Stop watching YouTube videos. Stop reading the fine print of the policy manual. The best life insurance sales training happens in front of a real person.
Step 2: Pick Your Lane (One Product, One Market)
The biggest mistake a brand new life insurance agent makes is trying to be everything to everyone. You can’t sell IULs to high-net-worth business owners and final expense to seniors at the same time. You’ll end up confused, and your prospects will smell your lack of expertise from a mile away.
Pick one product (like Mortgage Protection or Whole Life) and one target market (like middle-income families). Become the expert in that one area. Once you’ve mastered the life insurance marketing and sales system for that niche, then, and only then, can you expand.
Step 3: Call Your Warm Market TODAY (The Practice Script)
You need to get your “reps” in. Your warm market (friends and family) is the safest place to start. But don’t call them and try to “sell” them. That’s how you lose friends.
Use the Practice Presentation Script:
“Hey [Name], I just started a new career as a financial professional. I’m in training right now, and I need to do 10 practice presentations this week to get my certification. I’m not looking to sell you anything, I just need someone I trust to let me go through the material so I can get comfortable. Could you help me out for 20 minutes tomorrow?”
9 times out of 10, they will say yes. And 5 times out of 10, during that “practice,” they will realize they actually need what you’re offering. This is the fastest way to get your first sale for new insurance agents.
Step 4: Run a Fact-Find (Ask, Don’t Tell)
Most agents talk too much. They vomit product features all over the prospect. Stop it.
Your job isn’t to sell a policy; it’s to solve a problem. But you can’t solve a problem you haven’t identified yet. You must master the art of the fact-find.
Ask questions that uncover the “Why”:
- “If you weren’t here tomorrow, what would happen to the house?”
- “How much of your income does your family rely on just to pay the bills?”
- “What is your biggest concern when it comes to your financial future?”
When they answer, don’t interrupt. Let the silence do the work. The person asking the questions is the one in control of the sale.
Step 5: Find the Money (Found Money Management™)
The #1 reason people don’t buy life insurance isn’t because they don’t want it: it’s because they think they can’t afford it.

If you want to know how to sell life insurance at a high level, you have to help people find the money. We call this Found Money Management™. You aren’t asking them for “extra” money; you are showing them how to take money they are already wasting (on taxes, high-interest debt, or inefficient savings) and redirecting it into a plan that actually works for them.
Step 6: Close Your First Case (The Simple Close)
Closing shouldn’t be a high-pressure event. If you did the fact-find correctly, the close is just the next logical step.
Use a simple, low-pressure close:
“Based on what you told me, this plan covers [Problem A] and [Problem B] within the budget we discussed. Does this look like the right move for your family, or is there something we should change?”
If they say it looks good, ask for the application. It’s that simple. Don’t overcomplicate it.
Expert Tip: Jeremy Nason’s Advice
After coaching thousands of life insurance agents over the past three decades, I’ve learned something surprising: the agents who succeed usually aren’t the smartest or the most experienced. They’re the ones who commit to consistent daily action.
Too many new agents spend weeks trying to memorize products, waiting until they feel confident enough to make calls or meet with prospects. Unfortunately, confidence doesn’t come first. Confidence comes from taking action.
Every successful agent has stumbled through awkward presentations, heard “no” more times than they can count, and questioned whether they made the right career choice. The difference is that they kept going, learned from each conversation, and followed a proven process instead of trying to reinvent one.
You don’t have to figure this business out on your own. Find a proven system, learn from experienced professionals, and allow someone who’s already walked the path to help you avoid the mistakes that cause most new agents to quit.
Step 7: Find a Mentor and Follow a Proven System
One of the biggest mistakes new insurance agents make is believing they have to figure everything out by themselves.
You can spend the next six months learning through trial and error, making costly mistakes, becoming discouraged, and risking becoming part of the large percentage of agents who leave the business during their first few years.
Or you can shorten your learning curve by learning from people who have already built successful insurance careers.
A good mentor can help you:
- Improve your sales conversations
- Handle objections with confidence
- Avoid common mistakes
- Stay accountable to your goals
- Build confidence through real-world coaching
- Grow your business faster than you could on your own
Whether it’s through your agency, an experienced producer, or a professional coaching program, investing in your education is one of the highest-return decisions you’ll ever make.
Remember, successful agents rarely succeed alone.
The 24-Hour “No-Excuses” Challenge
Stop “preparing” to start. Do these three things in the next 24 hours:
- Stop watching training videos for the day.
- Call 5 people in your warm market using the “Practice Presentation” script.
- Book at least 1 practice appointment for this week.
Success in this business is built on activity, not just intention!
