Excerpt: Most agents don't need more information. They need help using what they already know. Here's why coaching, practice, and feedback close the gap between knowing and doing

You Don’t Need Another Insurance Sales Course: You Need Help Using What You Already Know

How many insurance sales courses have you bought?

How many webinars have you watched, scripts have you downloaded, and articles have you saved for “later”?

Now answer the harder question:

How much of that information are you actually using?

If insurance prospects ghosting has become a pattern in your business, the answer probably is not another course.

You are not short on information.

You are short on implementation, practice, feedback, and accountability.

I have been in this business for more than 30 years, and I have watched the industry move from limited training resources to an endless stream of information. Today, you can search Google, YouTube, or ChatGPT and find an answer in seconds.

Need a prospecting script?

There are hundreds.

Need better questions?

They are everywhere.

Need help handling an objection?

Take your pick.

But if information alone built successful careers, every agent would be a top producer.

That is not what we see.

Agents are still struggling with prospecting, appointments, fact-finding, follow-up, objections, presentations, and closing consistently.

Why?

Because knowing what to do and doing it week after week are two different skills.

The Real Problem Is Not More Training

Most agents with experience already know what they should be doing.

You know you should prospect consistently. Are you?

You know you should ask better questions. Are you listening to the answers?

You know you should avoid talking too much. Do you still find yourself taking over the appointment?

You know you should follow up. How many people are sitting in your CRM waiting for a call you never made?

You know you should ask for referrals and ask for the business.

Are you?

That is the gap.

More information will not automatically close it.

When insurance prospects ghosting follows an appointment, many agents immediately search for a better text message or closing line. But the real problem may have started much earlier, when the prospect felt unheard, rushed, or disconnected from the conversation.

A Course Cannot Watch You Work

I believe in training.

Training gives you concepts, systems, questions, presentations, and strategies. It shows you what good selling should look like.

But a course has a built-in limitation:

It cannot see you.

It cannot sit in on your appointment and notice that you answered a question the client never asked.

It cannot tell you that you presented too early.

It cannot hear that you rushed through fact finding in six minutes.

It cannot ask why you did not prospect last week.

It cannot review the objection that stopped you cold yesterday.

That is not a criticism of courses. It is simply not what courses are designed to do.

That is where insurance sales coaching becomes different.

Training Gives You Knowledge. Coaching Gives You Feedback.

Try becoming a good golfer by watching instructional videos.

You can learn about grip, stance, swing mechanics, club selection, and course strategy. You may understand every concept.

But eventually, somebody has to watch you swing.

Why?

Because what you think you are doing and what you are actually doing are often two different things.

Insurance coach and agent reviewing conversation notes together during a practical coaching session

Selling works the same way.

An agent may say, “I ask plenty of questions.”

Maybe he does.

But are they the right questions? Is he listening to the answers? When the client reveals something important, does he follow that thread, or return to the checklist?

Another agent may say, “I do not pressure people.”

Good. Neither do I.

But perhaps he is so afraid of sounding pushy that he never asks the client to make a decision.

Those blind spots are difficult to identify by yourself.

A good coach can often see them in minutes.

Stop Solving the Wrong Problem

This is one of the biggest reasons agents stay stuck for years.

They work harder on the wrong issue.

They think they need more leads. The real problem is what happens during the appointment.

They think they need a better closing line. The real problem began during discovery.

They think they need a different product. The real problem is that they are presenting too much.

They think they need motivation. The real problem is that they do not have a process they can repeat.

When you solve the wrong problem, working harder only makes you tired.

Sometimes you need another person’s eyes.

The 7-Step Trusted-Advisor Sales Process

Coaching should not be vague encouragement. It should help you improve specific behaviors inside a repeatable process.

Use these seven steps in order:

  1. Get the facts. Understand the prospect’s family, income, obligations, assets, liabilities, existing coverage, and current situation.
  2. Get the goal. Find out what the prospect wants to accomplish.
  3. Get the why. Discover why that goal matters personally.
  4. Get the priority. Help the prospect identify which concern needs attention first.
  5. Say it back. Summarize what you heard in the prospect’s own language.
  6. Ask permission. Invite the prospect to hear ideas based on what they shared.
  7. Then present. Show the recommendation only after the need, reason, and priority are clear.

This is where insurance fact-finding questions become more than data collection.

The facts matter.

But the goal, the why, and the priority are what turn information into a meaningful recommendation.

Scripts Are Learning Tools, Not Lines to Memorize

Insurance sales scripts can help.

They give new agents structure. They provide language for difficult moments. They help you understand how a conversation can open, develop, and move toward a decision.

But scripts are not the skill.

A script says:

Say this, then say this, then say this.

A conversation framework gives you direction without locking you into exact words.

That means you can listen, adapt, and follow the prospect instead of waiting for an opportunity to recite your next line.

Use insurance sales scripts as learning tools. Study why the questions work. Practice the language aloud. Then replace memorized lines with a natural framework that sounds like you.

The goal is not to sound like Jeremy.

The goal is for the client to think:

“That person understood me.”

Why Weekly Coaching Changes Results

Common Questions About Insurance Sales CoachingWhat is insurance sales coaching?

It's help applying what you know in real situations. That covers feedback on your sales conversations, working through actual cases, prospecting, marketing, objections, closing, and somebody holding you to what you said you'd do.

What's the difference between training and coaching?

Training teaches you the concepts and the systems. Coaching is about using them. It's feedback, correction, and working on the specific spot where you're stuck.

Can coaching help an experienced agent?

Absolutely. Twenty years in the business doesn't get rid of blind spots or bad habits. Sometimes it protects them. A good insurance sales coach gives an experienced producer an outside look at what he's actually doing.

Do new agents need coaching?

New agents usually need both. Knowing your products doesn't teach you how to prospect, run an appointment, explain a recommendation, or handle something you didn't see coming.

How do I get better at selling life insurance?

Product knowledge, prospecting, communication, practice, reps, feedback, and actually doing it week after week. There's no shortcut, but there's a clear path.

Improvement rarely happens in one dramatic moment.

It happens through small corrections.

You learn something. You use it. You hit a snag. You bring the situation to coaching. You adjust. You try again.

Then another challenge appears the following week.

That is how skills develop.

That is why weekly live insurance sales coaching is central to the Insurance Pro Shop approach.

Bring the appointment that fell apart.

Bring the case you do not know how to position.

Bring the objection that keeps beating you.

Bring the prospecting problem, marketing problem, follow-up problem, or presentation problem.

Bring the part of the conversation you dread.

Now you are not discussing insurance sales in general.

You are working on your business.

Practice Builds Confidence

Agents often tell me, “I just need more confidence.”

Confidence is not something you find.

You build it through reps.

You have the conversation, then have it again. You handle the objection, then hear it again next week. You present the case, review what worked, correct what did not, and try again.

That is how the fear begins to fade.

Use this simple practice routine:

  • Read important language aloud to improve your pace, tone, and comfort.
  • Practice variations so unexpected answers do not throw you off.
  • Role-play common concerns such as price, timing, existing coverage, and spouse involvement.
  • Record practice sessions when possible so you can hear rushed delivery or unnecessary interruptions.
  • Work on one skill at a time instead of trying to repair your entire sales process in one afternoon.

When insurance prospects ghosting follows an appointment that seemed positive, do not immediately search for a magic follow-up phrase. Review the conversation. What did the prospect say? What did you miss? Where did the discussion stop feeling personal?

You Probably Already Own Enough Training

This may sound unusual coming from someone who provides insurance sales training.

But I do not want you joining the Insurance Pro Shop Membership because you need another login.

You probably have unfinished courses, unopened PDFs, saved webinars, and scripts sitting in a folder somewhere.

I am not trying to sell you more information for information’s sake.

I want to help you use what you already know.

Inside the membership, you get:

  • Weekly live coaching and training
  • The How to Close 9 Out of 10 Sales system
  • Sales scripts and natural conversation frameworks
  • Fact-finding tools
  • Client presentations
  • Lead generation and marketing resources
  • Case design support
  • Full courses on insurance sales and marketing

But the library is not the only value.

The real value is having somewhere to take the problem that is affecting your production right now.

Insurance Pro Shop is not for everyone.

If you want a magic script that eliminates prospecting, this is not it.

If you want someone else to build your business, this is not it.

If you plan to buy another course and never open it, please do not join.

But if you are serious about improving your conversations, confidence, fact-finding, appointment setting, presentations, closing, marketing, case work, consistency, and income, we should talk.

New agents need guidance.

Struggling agents need a process and honest feedback.

Experienced producers need an outside perspective because 20 years in the business does not eliminate blind spots or bad habits.

Stop Looking for the Magic Answer

There is no single script, lead company, product, closing technique, AI tool, marketing plan, or insurance sales course that builds a career for you.

Careers are built by learning skills and using them repeatedly.

That is not as exciting as the next shiny thing somebody is selling.

But it works.

As Lew Nason often taught:

“If you want to succeed: in life or in business: education isn’t optional. It’s how you grow, how you sharpen your skills, and how you learn to make better decisions.”

The mission is simple:

Stop collecting information. Start applying it.

That is what coaching, practice, and feedback are for.

Become a Better Trusted Advisor

If insurance prospects ghosting keeps showing up after your appointments, bring the conversation you keep stumbling through.

Bring the objection that keeps beating you.
