In 1969, a man with a dream… envisioned a financial planning organization of highly trained, skilled, and dedicated professionals! Who would “Help average people to learn how to spend, save, invest, insure and plan wisely for the future… So they can achieve financial independence.” That man with the vision was Loren Dunton. After many years of hard work and sacrifice, in 1982, he realized the first part of his dream… with the creation of the “Certified Financial Planner” designation! And, then a short time later the International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP) was born.

Today, it seems that most of the people that promote financial planning, and most of the people who call themselves financial planners! Have strayed from Loren Dunton’s vision. Financial Planning has now become all about ‘helping the wealthy to become wealthier.’ Their main focus and training are now on how to make money in the stock market. And then how to transfer that wealth to future generations. What Has Caused This Change In Training Focus From Real Financial Planning?
The main reason for this change in training focus… Is that the people who are responsible for training planners are focusing almost entirely on the technical aspects of financial planning. And they are spending very little on training financial planners, advisors, and agents on the marketing and sales aspects. The result is that most financial planners do not understand that they are still salespeople. So, when you do not know how to market and sell your financial services, then you are forced into taking the path of least resistance. You end up giving people what they want. Instead of helping average people to get what they really need. Even when you know it is not really in their best interest. Because of the lack of real financial planner training, you are forced into taking the easy sale. For you to make a living.
Without marketing and sales skills you cannot help people to see why they should meet with you.
Then without sales skills, you cannot help people to understand the problems they face today! Or the value of investing in the products and services you provide.
