The best and most complete definition we have found comes from Loren Dunton, the father of financial planning, he said;  “Helping middle-income families… to spend, save, invest, insure and plan wisely for the future… to achieve financial independence.”

As you can see, being a successful financial advisor is a lot more than just giving investment advice. In fact, offering advice on investing is just a small part of what you should do to help your clients to achieve financial independence.

Note: Even if you are not securities licensed… You do not need to offer your clients advice on investments to be a successful financial advisor. However, you might want to work with an investment advisor, if you have clients that currently have, or want to have money in the stock market.

What licenses do you need to be a successful financial advisor?

If you want to help your clients with securities… (mutual funds, stocks, bonds, etc.) then you will need to work with a broker. Or you will need to get your securities license or become a Registered Investment Adviser.

If you want to sell annuity and insurance products, then all you will need to get is your insurance license.

What training do you need to be a successful financial advisor?

Obviously, to be successful financial advisors you need to market your services so that you can get your message out… about your financial services. You will need to follow a marketing system that will attract the best prospects to you.

But even more important. If you want to be a successful financial advisor, then you must focus and learn how to help your clients. You are not just selling your products. To be a successful financial advisor you must learn to help your clients to solve all their problems. So that they can get what they need and want for themselves and their family.

That means you must learn how to do a good, thorough fact-find with the people you meet. You will want to learn the best questioning and listening skills. Because you will need to understand what your clients really need and want. Many times, your clients do not know what they need and want. So you have to ask questions to help your clients to discover it for themselves.

Do You Need To Be Certified, Or Have A Designation?

If you want to use the title of a financial advisor, then you do not need any certifications or designations. But you do need to have your securities license!

But, it may help your credibility if you do have a designation. Plus, when you have a designation, it will help you prove your commitment to your clients and your career.

Note: You don’t need any certifications or designations immediately. But you will want to earn some credentials through the years. And all of the additional training will certainly help you to get better at helping your clients!

The first designation we recommend for you is the… LUTCF… Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow, a longstanding industry designation, offered by our national industry association NAIFA.

Other certifications or designations to consider are the CLU, ChFC, or CFP. There are literally hundreds of certifications or designations to choose from.

And we offer the CTA Certified Trusted Advisor designation.

Are There Any Education Requirements?

There are no official requirements for you to be a financial advisor. But, it will help your career, if you have a degree or courses in Accounting, Taxes, Economics, Finance, Marketing, Business, or Commerce. This is just a small part of you being a REAL and successful financial advisor.

Note: You do not need to know all of the information above right now to be a successful financial advisor. But, you do need a knowledgeable support team to work with you! That is why we are here!
