Recently I met with a financial advisor who wanted help to grow his financial practice! As we talked I brought up the legendary Mehdi Fakharzadeh. I told him about Mehdi and his outstanding sales results over the years. And I was utterly shocked when this advisor stated that Medhi is not a real financial advisor! He is just a life insurance agent! He doesn’t sell investments!
Too many people think like the above advisor. They believe that a financial advisor is someone who just offers stock market investments or advice! They have the wrong idea of who is a real financial advisor, what they are supposed to do. And the marketing and sales training financial advisors need! A real financial advisor is someone who helps families with all of their financial concerns and problems! Not just helps families with their investments!
A Real Financial Advisor Is Supposed To Help Middle-Income Families!
Until we change people’s perceptions of our profession, most advisors will struggle to make a decent living. Why! Because most advisors do not understand what their real role is as financial advisors. How can they help families to see the value of their services? Why they should meet with you? And why they should take action?
Interestingly, when you look up the definition of a Financial Advisor, you will find it is basically the same as a Financial Planner. But what is even more interesting, is these Financial Advisor definitions go far beyond just providing investments or advice!
Loren Dunton, the “Father of Financial Planning” gave us this great definition of a financial planner… “a highly trained, skilled, and dedicated professional who helps middle-Income families to learn how to spend, save, invest, insure and plan wisely for the future, to achieve financial independence.” You’ll notice that ‘invest’ is only one of the five basic functions of a financial planner… or a financial advisor!
Thomas W. Johnson of Financial-Planning.com wrote: “When Loren Dunton first envisioned a financial planning profession, it was to serve the needs of the lower and middle classes. And not to help the wealthy make even more money. As the saying goes, healthy people don’t need a doctor.”

The sad truth is that most of the people that provide sales training for financial advisors just focus on investing in the stock market. Because that is where the company will make the most money. There is very little financial advisor sales training on how to help families with their insurance, budgeting, taxes, etc.! And, there is no financial advisor training on insurance marketing and sales! As a result, most advisors are seen as just salespeople that sell investments. This is why financial advisors have so much trouble attracting enough prospects, setting enough sales appointments, and closing enough sales!
Consider, if you don’t know how to market insurance and investment services, to get in front of the right prospects, then aren’t you forced to take whatever sales you can make? You are forced to take the easy, quick sale, to make a living! Even when the sale you make may not be the best for the client! So, you end up just giving families what they want and being just a salesperson. Instead of helping families to get what they really need. And being a real financial advisor. And, this is one of the big reasons for our compliance issues.
Without insurance marketing and sales training, you cannot help families to see why they should meet with you. And without marketing and sales training, you cannot help families to understand the problems they face. Or help families to understand the value of all the products and services you provide.

Then help middle-income families to protect their families and save for their future. That means we need to get the training we need to improve our insurance marketing and sales skills… so we attract the right people to us.
