At the tender age of 41, I nearly died 3 times and ended up disabled for a year
I had wanted a career that gave me a sense of adventure and passion, joy, and fulfillment! That also paid well. So, I went to law school and opened a law practice.
But I found myself in a life filled with aggressive and unhappy people. With mountains of paperwork and dozens of daily urgent phone calls! Plus more than 60 hours a week of court appearances, board meetings, client meetings, negotiations, deadlines, tedious document reviews, and tedious proceedings.
I’d be ordered to appear in courts in two different counties on the same day! A day that also included a real estate closing, a lengthy document review for which a small mistake could mean serious liability. Plus the preparation for a board meeting that took place on the same evening.
I had two little girls that I would only see at breakfast time sometimes and on one day on the weekend (the other was a workday). And a wife who loved our income, but hated that I was never home.
While I prided myself on being able to handle it all, my body eventually gave out. And at 41, I nearly died three times and was disabled for a year.
But the fault was mine.
Instead of focusing on an ideal client and one important problem that I could solve for the client! I said yes to almost everything that came my way. And much of it was business that, because of the learning curve, simply didn’t pay enough.
I allowed my ego to rule. “Court of International Trade for a tariff violation? Sure!” “Litigation in the Bankruptcy Court? Who better?” “Adoption terminating the rights of the drug-addicted mother?” I can handle that.” “Municipal Prosecutor? Yes, please.” “Attorney for a 600-member PBA covering 6 municipalities? I’m your man!” “Municipal Boards, town attorneys, real estate closings, business contracts and litigation, divorces, accident, and criminal cases? Bring them on. I’m good at them.”
And I was great at getting clients–especially through referrals. So, there was no shortage of business. At least I had the sense to hire help with some of the work, but it wasn’t enough.
I didn’t understand at the time that what I did wrong was to choose not to focus on an ideal client–one with a problem I could help with that paid me well and didn’t consume 16 hours a day.
Had I directed all my energy and resources to that one ideal client and one major challenge, the referrals would have come. I knew how to get them. And I might have still been doing that work today—an expert at my one thing.
