A couple of weeks ago, I got a phone call from a frustrated agent. He has been in the industry for almost 20 years. But he still struggles to find qualified leads to sit down and talk about life insurance and annuities. I talked with him about what he does to find qualified life insurance leads. We also talked about how he sets sales appointments, to see what we can do to help him there as well. After a few minutes, I realized that he never mentioned his current clients or referrals. So, I asked him… “You’ve been in the industry for 20 years now, how many clients do you currently have?”. “Over 20 thousand!“.“When was the last time you talked to them?” (He Has A Large P&C Agency)

Your current clients are your best-qualified life insurance leads. You will never know what your current clients need – unless you call and ask them. Then you can set an appointment to help them.

Find Qualified Life Insurance Leads!

How many times does the average person buy life insurance in their lifetime?  According to LIMRA, it is 5-7 times… and that does not include disability, annuities, etc. Now consider your current clients. How many times have you sold them? Who do you want to get their other 4-6 sales… you or another agent? Plus, when you stay in front of them, it takes away the opportunity for you to be replaced! So, aren’t your existing clients your best, qualified life insurance leads?

Then who is more likely to give you a referral (a qualified life insurance lead)… a stranger or someone who sees the value of your services? When you stay in contact with them, do you think that builds more credibility? If you are not in contact with them, then how will they give you more referrals (qualified life insurance leads)?

Now, let’s assume you set 10 sales appointments per week. Whether you are like this guy and have 20,000 or if you are new and only have 100 clients. Even if you only meet with half of them, how long would it take you to get through all of them?   1. Really? I guy who has been in the business 20 years has 20,000 clients and he’s struggling? Let’s see, that 1,000 new clients per year, which, if he works 50 weeks a year, equates to 20 new clients per week. If his average commission is only $500 per sale, he’s making $500,000 per year. And he’s struggling? Sorry, I call BS. Even the great Al Granum said we should strive for 50 new clients a year, not 1,000. Something doesn’t add up.

    • I agree. We hear it all the time… There are too many agents who have no idea how to work with their current clients and/or are afraid to work with their current clients!!!

      He is a p&C agent who bought an agency!
