Dear Friends, A while ago our good friend and legend Forrest ‘Wally’ Cato (now deceased) did an interview with the legendary Zig Ziglar (now deceased) about what it takes to be a success in insurance sales. And it certainly applies to you being successful in selling life insurance. I think Zig Ziglar’s message is extremely important and worth repeating.

Cato: How important is an image for the person who wants to be successful selling life insurance and their services today?
Zig Ziglar: Image is essential to be successful in selling life insurance. But this is where most folks miss their boat. Who would you trust or like? Would you select the person who is just another suit and is only typical or average? The guy who makes claims and promises that you suspect are a stretch? The guy who has no backup proof? Or would you prefer the person who is acclaimed, renowned, established, considered successful in his specialty, and well-known in your profession or your area? Few people go with the guy who claims to have over twenty-plus years of successful experience in selling life insurance, yet you never heard of him. And he can’t show you evidence of anything or his success in sales
Cato: What is your key advice for people on making difficult decisions?
Zig Ziglar: People often say that sales motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing. That’s why I recommend bathing often. Money isn’t the most important thing in your life, but it’s reasonably close to oxygen in your ‘got to have its scale. Every choice you make has a result. Not doing what you should do is a choice. Not investing in yourself can be your choice. These are bad choices for you. Sometimes adversity is what you need to face to force you to make the right choices to become successful in selling life insurance. Failures choose to do little or nothing significant. They don’t improve their skills. They do nothing more, nothing new, and nothing additional or different to be successful in selling life insurance.

Cato: What is the main cause of most agent failures?
Zig Ziglar: The chief cause of most agent failures is trading what you want most… for what you want right now.
Cato: Can a sales agent improve by doing the same things over and over again?
Zig Ziglar: If you are doing the right things, then yes! If you are doing the wrong things, then no! There is little improvement you can make from doing nothing, or from doing nothing more. You don’t have to be great to start. But you do have to start and continue with the right habits to become great and successful in selling insurance.
