Those Financial Advisors Weren’t There For Me! (They Missed Making The Easiest Life Insurance Sales!)

Back in my days as an attorney, two of my clients were financial advisors working with two different broker-dealer/insurance companies. One of them was a branch manager.

We went out to dinner together. I went to Seton Hall basketball games with one of them. I helped them close on the purchase of their homes and with wills and other things they needed.

But neither one of them ever approached me about my financial situation.  Neither one of them suggested I save for my daughters’ education. Neither one of them asked me what I was doing about retirement.

As a lawyer at the time, I’d like to think I was very good at what I did.  I could handle—and sometimes master—just about any challenge.  As an investor, however, I knew nothing.

But neither of these financial advisors, who, I’m sure were great at what they did, asked me about my financial situation or challenged me to start saving and investing.

In fact, looking back, I didn’t realize at the time that both financial advisors sold life insurance as part of their work, and they never mentioned it.

A nice young agent dropped in on me at my office one day and was the first person to bring up life insurance, so I bought a term policy from him.

The policy was delivered by mail, and I never heard from or saw him again. So, when I wanted to increase my coverage and take on a disability policy, I did it with another agent.

Those Two Financial Advisors Missed Making The Easiest Life Insurance Sales!

Maybe I was unfortunate — or willfully — ignorant.  But had either of those financial advisor friends approached me, I would have had a retirement plan in place. I would have started a college savings plan. And I would have purchased life insurance from them.

Instead, I accumulated over $120,000 in debt to pay for my daughter’s college education.

And my retirement accounts started only after I began working in the financial and insurance world. They are limited by the relatively short time I’ve been saving and investing.

I converted my own term policies to IULs because even the last agent I saw never stayed in touch with me. I don’t even remember his name.

But why didn’t these financial advisors approach me?

Were they intimidated in some way by my profession?

Did they think because I was a good lawyer that I must also know how to save or I must be ‘all set’?

Were they waiting for me to ask them (something I would have done had it occurred to me to do it)?

And why didn’t those life insurance agents stay in touch with me?  They could have done more business and been introduced to others through me. They would have made some easy life insurance sales!
