A few days ago, I identified five issues that I’ve come across often in conversations with advisors that are holding them back:
1. They’re doing their own admin work
2. They aren’t discussing being introduced by their clients and other connections
3. They’re paying for services that aren’t producing results
4. They’re refusing to approach people they know for fear of offending them
5. They don’t have systems in place for outreach and processing
Over the past few days, I’ve discussed the first three issues holding agents back from growing their insurance sales and business. Today I want to address the remaining two:

If you’re one of the many people who are uncomfortable working with your ‘warm market’, you are ignoring how valuable your expertise is to everyone around you.
Imagine you made a deal with a country club that charged an initiation fee of $25,000, to reduce the fee to $500 for anyone you brought in. Who would you call to invite them to get in on this deal?
Everyone, right? And your reason would be that it’s a tremendous value.
If you’re not seeing that this is the kind of value you bring to the table for anyone you reach out to, you don’t understand how important your work is.
Even in your very first conversation with someone, you’re opening their eyes to the importance of organizing their thoughts about money or retirement, or death. Talking with them about important things they may never have talked about with anyone else. How valuable is that?
But when someone retires, dies, or becomes disabled, you are the one that has arranged to keep them or their family whole. The lawyer they may have had for years isn’t going to bring them a check. Their accountant won’t be doing that either. Only YOU bring (or arrange for) the check they need.
Why wouldn’t you be calling everyone you know to make sure you can help them in these ways?
5. They don’t have systems in place for outreach and processing
In Tested in the Trenches, authors Carson and Sanduski identify 9 systems that every advisor needs to have in place to grow insurance sales to have a successful business.
In my experience, the most important of these are systems related to client acquisition, client relationship management, relationship building (CRM), and processing and keeping track of the paperwork so that nothing falls through the cracks.
But many of the advisors I’ve talked with don’t have a clear, simple system for any of these. They spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours chasing shiny new prospecting ideas. Only to abandon them for the next one that comes along.
They do annual reviews every few years. They forget to follow up on signatures and documents until they’re faced with a crisis.
If this sounds like you, start fixing it. It’s just one more thing that is limiting your insurance sales growth potential.
