Good News About Middle-Class Households!

Yes, the “middle class is disappearing” as we hear all the time. But it’s because middle-class households in the US are moving up to higher-income groups… And not down to lower-income groups. In 1967, only 9% of US households (only 1 in 11) earned $100,000 or more (in 2017 dollars). However, in 2017, more than 1 in 4 US households (29.2%) were in that high-income category, a new record high. In other words, over the last half-century, the share of US households earning incomes of $100,000 or more (in 2017 dollars) has more than tripled! 

At the same time, the share of middle-class households earning $35,000 to $100,000 (in 2017 dollars)… Has decreased over time, from more than half of US households in 1967 (53.8 %) to less than half (only 41.3%) in 2017.  Likewise, the share of low-income households earning $35,000 or less (in 2017 dollars) has decreased from more than one-third of households in 1967 (37.2 %)… To below one-third of US households last year (29.5%), a near-record low.

The Bad News For Middle-Class Households!

A survey in 2018 found that a third (33%) of middle-income adults don’t have as much as $400 to cover an unexpected expense. And while the middle-class lifestyle grows more expensive and uncertain, it’s also moving beyond the reach of younger generations.

According to Under Pressure: The Squeezed Middle Class… The middle class has shrunk in most countries as it has become more difficult for younger generations to make it to the middle class (defined as earning between 75% and 200% of the median national income). While almost 70% of baby boomers were part of middle-class households (families) in their twenties, only 60% of millennials are there today.

Middle incomes are barely higher today than they were ten years ago. Middle incomes are increasing by just 0.3% per year. Which is a third less than the average income of the richest 10%.

The cost of a middle-class lifestyle has increased faster than inflation. Housing, for example, makes up the largest single spending item for middle-class households (families). It is around one-third (33%) of disposable income. Which is up from a quarter (25%) in the 1990s. House prices have been growing three times faster than household median income over the last two decades.

More than one in five (20%) middle-class households (families) spend more than they earn. Over-indebtedness is higher for them than for both low-income and high-income households.

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 14, 2020  – Only a small percentage of older Americans, 7%, receive income from Social Security, a defined benefit pension, and a defined contribution account. Retirement income from these three sources is widely considered to be the ideal situation to ensure retirement security, particularly for the middle class. Retirees with these three sources of income are far less likely to face poverty and economic hardship. Unfortunately, 40.2 % of retirees only have income from Social Security.
