How To Succeed In Insurance Sales… Beyond Your Wildest Dreams!

Dear Friends... When I first got into insurance sales in the 80s, I was fortunate to have two great mentors. It was with their help that I led my sales office during the recession from 1982 to 1984!  They taught me about persistence, setting goals, keeping it simple, self-belief, and total honesty!  But, here is the most important lesson that I learned from them.  If you want to succeed in insurance sales…  Then you must take the time to build relationships!  People will not do business with you until they know you, like you, and feel that they can trust you!  It wasn’t until early in 1985, that I learned what I consider to be the ultimate lesson to succeed in insurance sales!  You Must Learn A Way To Really Help Families!

In 1985, the AVP for Met Life approached me and a few other top agents to work on an exciting new pilot life insurance sales program. He had found a group of producers in New York who had put together a revolutionary new sales program to sell cash-value life insurance.  This program helped families to maximize their eligibility for college financial aid. In simple terms, it helped families to qualify for free money for college.

When Mr. Stabile briefly explained the program to me, I jumped at the chance to learn more about the college aid funding program. The fact is, I had a sixteen-year-old daughter in a private Catholic School who was planning to go to college.  And my wife and I were already wondering how we would pay for it.  I saw this as a great opportunity to help both myself and other parents with the same problem.

And then we learned how to approach families with high school juniors, to help them to find the money to pay for college. We learned how to help families to reposition their assets and modify their spending habits to pay off their debts. We were also reducing their income taxes and we were removing the equity from their home to legally hide it in cash-value life insurance. So that they could qualify for more free college financial aid. We were helping families see a much brighter and more secure financial future.

After just a few weeks of training, I was able to present myself to my clients, friends, family, and prospects as an expert in college education funding. And, within a few months, I was setting more appointments, closing more insurance sales, making larger commissions, and receiving a lot more referrals. The results were incredible – I was earning over $100,000 per year back in the ’80s!

Over time, I realized that these sound financial strategies could help every middle-income family to reduce their debt. So that they could start to save for their future. We were showing people how they could improve their current situation without spending any additional money or changing their lifestyle! Eventually, we became experts in helping middle-income families find the money to Live Debt-Free And Truly Wealthy.

You must learn how to establish yourself as a specialist helping families to solve a specific problem, for a specific group of people. People must recognize you as the expert in a specific area. You must gain people’s trust and respect… So that they will want to meet with you.

Contrary to what you may want to believe, the whole world is not your market. Even if everybody can use your product or service. There is a specific group of people, with an intense, immediate, need and want for the benefits you offer. Find that “target market”! Then focus your efforts on helping those families and you will soon discover how profitable your business can be. And you will succeed in insurance sales… beyond your wildest dreams.

Define your target market

If you want to succeed today in insurance sales you need to work in a target market. A target market is a group of people that have something in common. It could be a hobby, a business, owning a home, or whether they have children. Those who are interested in something cohesive and are all part of the same mindset all think the same way.

Members of a strong target market should have the following characteristics: Easily identifiable: Easily approachable: Has money that is accessible!

Don’t forget, that the help you are offering families should satisfy a dominant, immediate need. The group should be large enough to make your specialty worthwhile – so you will succeed in insurance sales!

Buying today for the future

If you want more people to see and buy from you today, to succeed in insurance sales! Then you have to find out what people want today.

One of the most difficult aspects of the products we offer is, that for the most part, they are for future use. Think about it! With most of our products, we explain to our prospects how they will be protected if someone dies or becomes disabled, sometime in the future. Or, we paint a picture of how important it is to save for retirement. And how investing a few dollars a month now will result in a guaranteed nest egg when they retire.

While all of these things are true, they can be extremely difficult to sell because they are future needs, not immediate ones. There is no compelling reason for our prospects to do something today instead of tomorrow.

Almost everyone these days has a short-term outlook on life. The only thing prospects want to buy is something that will satisfy their immediate needs. If they get hurt, then they will pay a doctor to heal them. If they get sued, then they will pay a lawyer to keep them out of jail. That is why doctors and lawyers can be some of the absolute worst marketers in the world and they will still make very nice incomes. They are selling immediate needs.

Fortunately, there is a simple solution to this problem. If you want to succeed today in insurance sales… all you have to do is find a product or service that satisfies your prospect’s most pressing, immediate need.

Attract people with money

In today’s world, it seems that none of us has any extra money. We are all living up to, or beyond our means. So, even if your prospect agrees that they need and want your products and services, it is often a struggle to find the money to pay for them. It generally means that for them to buy our product, then they will have to decide to make a sacrifice, somewhere. Remember, it’s useless to identify a target market and be able to satisfy an immediate need – if the prospect doesn’t have the money to buy your product or service.

If you want to succeed today in insurance sales… then you need to help families find the money to take action.

People hate to make big decisions – and make sacrifices

The easier way is for you to look for money that can be moved. People have their money tucked away in all sorts of places, like CDs, money market accounts, IRAs, mutual funds, 401(k)s, savings bonds, and real estate. And many of them spend their money on lower-priority items. They are not averse to moving that money, however, once they understand how they will benefit. And as long as they don’t have to make any sacrifices to their current lifestyle.
