They now focus most of their life insurance marketing on finding, attracting, and serving affluent prospects and markets. They will tell you that is where agents can make the most money. And, they can do it quickly, with the least amount of effort and expense.

The sad truth is they all want you to believe that… Because the affluent prospects have more money… Then they have more discretionary dollars. So, they believe they are the way to find your best life insurance prospects – leads. According to them, it should make it easier for you to close more and larger life insurance sales. Ah… But only, if it were true and that easy!

The Reality Of Their Change In Focus…

To begin with, is there any question there are fewer people in the affluent markets? However, when we talk to most advisors they all want to believe that we are talking about the top 5% -10% of the U.S. population. Which, if it were true, you would probably find enough of your best life insurance prospects – leads to work with.

But, the reality of the situation is that only 1 in 125 Americans have more than $1 million in assets… Such as stocks, bonds, bank accounts, real estate, and the businesses they own. That is based on a study by Capgemini and Merrill Lynch & Co. So only about 2.5 million Americans… Or less than 1% of our population (over age 15) are millionaires. And, that report did not factor in the value of people’s primary residences… Which would increase the number of millionaires. However, because many of these millionaires have their assets tied up in their businesses and real estate… Few of these people have liquid assets to invest in your products. So are they where you will find your best life insurance prospects… leads!

Think About It… With all the agents, advisors, and P&C agencies moving into the affluent markets… And chasing the top 0.5% – 1% of the population… Is it any wonder that most people struggle to find enough good life insurance prospects – leads?

And, because they chase affluent prospects, they struggle to make a decent living selling life insurance. The affluent markets have become very competitive. Just to take a look in your local newspaper on a Sunday… If you want to see how many people offer annuity and investment seminars every month to prospects in the affluent markets!

And, then to compound the problem… It is where you will find the most competition from banks, attorneys, accountants, and brokers. Plus, all of the get-rich-quick scam artists?

Now, when Tom Stanley and William Danko, the authors of The Millionaire Next Door, decided to investigate how people get wealthy, they found something extremely odd. First of all, they found that many people who live in upscale neighborhoods and drive luxurious cars do not have extreme wealth. They are not millionaires, because most of them live well above their means. And, they are spending more money than they make to maintain the appearance of being wealthy. The truth is, like most people today, these people are struggling every month just to make ends meet.

The Capgemini/Merrill Lynch report also broke out how these very rich people allocated their assets. These millionaires put 34% in equities; 27% in fixed-income investments; 13% in real estate investments; 14% in alternative investments like hedge funds, foreign currency, and commodities; and kept 12% in cash or deposits.

The Spectrum Group survey found that more than 35% of the affluent are retired and 36 percent are business owners. The overwhelming majority, 86% are married, and the mean age is just under 56.

And, according to a report from the Economic Policy Institute, The State of Working America “64% of American households have stock holdings worth $5,000 or less, or own no stock at all.”
