The Secret To A Successful Insurance Agent Sales Career… And Life?

09/01/2020… Today, I want to go over an important secret concept that affects not just your successful insurance agent sales career, but all areas of your life… your mental attitude.  Your mental attitude is one of the strongest forces in your life. Your mental attitude can help you overcome any obstacle! Or your mental attitude can cause you to give up before you even start.  Your successful insurance sales career, relationships, happiness, and everything else under the sun are affected. Mental attitude can be broken up into three parts: drive, extreme ownership, and outlook.

Part 1 Of Mental Attitude… Drive. 

The secret to a successful life and insurance agent sales career has nothing to do with the circumstances in which you were born. It’s the hard truth, and no one likes hearing it… much less doing something about it! What counts is how hard you are willing to work – your drive! Nothing will ever get done unless you do it. So set a goal and get to work. A million excuses will come up. But if you keep your priorities clear and limit distractions, you will be well on your way to a successful insurance agent sales career and life.

Eric Thomas describes ‘drive’ perfectly saying, “When you want to be successful as bad as you want to breathe… Then you will be successful.” You must prioritize and not relent in your pursuit of what you want. Obsess it! Not reaching your goal for the day should bother you. Listen, motivation doesn’t last. So do not let one rainy week ruin your goal. Remind yourself what you are working for… and push through it! Going all the way takes passion and drive. You have it in you to have a successful life and insurance agent sales career!

Eventually, you will get knocked down by life – hard! It is going to take your breath away and leave you cursing in pain. In that moment of catastrophic failure you have two options: get up or give up. Will you get up, learn a lesson, and then keep moving forward? What matters most is how you respond in those situations… because they are inevitable. Remember, just like it is never an option to stop breathing… it is never an option for you to give up.  Challenge yourself to maintain a positive mental attitude and use it. You can have a successful insurance agent sales career and life if you really want it!

Part 2 of Mental Attitude… Extreme Ownership.

Radical change happens to people who hold themselves accountable. They take ownership of everything in their life: it is on them, not their spouse, boss, or any other –insert excuse here-.  You might have been dealt a crappy hand. You can take that hand and let it ruin your game, or you can own every single card and use it as fuel. At the end of the day, you control how to play your hand, not the other way around. Everyone’s starting points and stepping stones are different.  But look at everything you’ve accomplished so far. It can be as large as being the first one in your family to own a home, or as small as running a mile without walking (or smaller). These are examples of you breaking the mold created by you and possibly, your past.

You can own your successes and failures in life and in your insurance sales career. Let them carry you onward and upwards. Do they define you? Does your past define you? Only if you let it!

A positive mental attitude means not letting anything but you define yourself. Look in the mirror and have a heart-to-heart with your reflection. Be real with yourself and open up, it is okay. Whatever you discussed with your reflection is yours to own and if you want to, change.

Back in middle school, our principal would come on the PA system and she would finish her morning announcements with the following statement… “Make it a great day, or not, the choice is yours!” Every day you have a million choices available. It is your responsibility to pick the ones that progress you toward your goals. If you chose good ones, you will end up empowering and inspiring those around you.  Your choices and how you see your day will determine whether you will have a good or bad day… and a successful insurance agent sales career. And that is all about your mental attitude.

Part 3 of Mental Attitude… Outlook.

What you seek is what you will find; a day is how you see it.  You can choose to see and focus on all the negatives. Or you can take them with a grain of salt and focus on the positives.  Zig Ziglar has several amazing speeches on “stinkin’ thinkin’” and the biggest takeaway from them is that your happiness in life is only dependent on you, not your circumstances, and not on others. You have to live with yourself for, hopefully, eighty-plus years. So you might as well make the best of it and stay positive.

Maintaining a positive mental attitude is not a sprint; it is an ultra marathon that does not stop until your last breath. Awareness of your thoughts and actions is the first step to changing them. Find something that drives you, take ownership of yourself, and then get hyped about what is coming up in your future… Because it is going to be epic.

It is all up to you to determine how successful you will be in your life and your insurance agent sales career!
